McCann brace helps Cheltenham cruise past Evesham
Cheltenham got their preseason campaign off to a winning start on Saturday afternoon, beating Evesham 3-0 at the Spiers and Hartwell Stadium.
There were plenty of positives for the Robins, with four players making their Cheltenham Town debuts as the squad continued its preparations for the new season.
The visitors took the lead after just 15 minutes with debutant Charlie McCann opening his Cheltenham account with a composed finish after a rebound from George Miller’s shot to put the Robins 1-0 ahead.
Cheltenham continued to look dangerous with George Menor providing a constant outlet upfront. His hold-up play was immense throughout the afternoon, allowing Cheltenham to bring others into the game and build attacks from the front.
In the goalkeeper position for Evesham was 20 year-old Brendan Beard, who certainly impressed between the sticks. Let’s hope that new signing Wyll Stanway can have the same impact in net for us!
Joe Tomlinson and Jordan Shipley both started the game, making their Cheltenham debuts, while Pierce Sweeney was introduced at halftime for his first appearance in Cheltenham colours.
On the touch line, Steve Cotterill was instrumental throughout the afternoon, constantly communicating with the players and helping to drive the team on as the Robins looked to maintain the control of the contest.
The Robins continued to push for a second and eventually got their award with five minutes of normal time remaining through another goal from Charlie McCann.
Sopuruchukwu Obieri then added a third goal in the first minute of stoppage time, putting the finishing touch on a convincing 3-0 victory.
A strong start, four debuts, a clean sheet and plenty of positive to take from the afternoon.
However, Steve Cotterill was more impressed with how good the new kit looks!
