Cheltenham Ease Past Slimbridge
Slimbridge 1-6 Cheltenham:
A good outing for Steve Cotterill’s Robins, who put 6 past a spirited Slimbridge side, to grab their 2nd pre season victory.
The game had a slow start, as Slimbridge threatened Cheltenham with a few half chances. However, the best chance fell to debutant Shaun McWilliams, whose indecisiveness in front of goal cost Cheltenham the go ahead.
The deadlock was finally broken, as an inch perfect McWilliams ball found George Miller, whose dink over the keeper was helped over the line by the nose of Slimbridge defender Toby Soule.
Charlie McCann then bagged an opportunist brace, popping up in the right place to tap home from close range twice, and make the score 0-3 to the away side.
That’s how the half would end as Josh Stokes’ speculative effort only managed to bounce back off the post, and Jack Smith’s earlier effort bobbling just wide of it.
Smith would be lucky enough to get on the scoresheet, with an incredibly well taken strike, just three minutes after half time.
However, the Robins seemed to show no mercy in this half, as some excellent linkup play, (particularly between Tomkinson and Broom), allowed the Robins to score three more.
Their fourth of the day came from a driven ball into the box, which was beautifully spun upon and converted by winger Jordan Shipley, who beamed with pride after scoring his first goal for the Robins.
Around 10 minutes later, Cheltenham had further extended the scoreline to 5-1 as striker George Miller showed the determination to beat the keeper to the ball, and slam home an emphatic shot from a tight angle.
The sixth would come from an even tighter angle, as not minutes from time, Mark Barber managed to score from pretty much adjacent to the corner flag, extending the scoreline to 1-6.
Barber definitely wins goal of the day for me.
The Robins are next in action against League One side MK Dons on August 1st 2026, and with a spirited performance like today, Cheltenham can definitely put Dons in a lot of discomfort.
